The launching ceremony of Malir University of Science & Technology was organized at a local hotel in the city on May 24. It was attended by the social, political and educational elite, professionals and philanthropists. The university has been sponsored by Zafar and Atia Foundation Charitable Trust, whose chairman and chancellor of the University, Professor Syed Tipu Sultan, is a well known physician and educationist. He highlighted the unique features of the newly established university and mentioned that the main purpose for establishing Malir University is to serve the population living in Malir, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, Korangi and adjoining rural areas, so that young men and women from the middle and lower-middle income families could obtain quality higher education at affordable fee.
Professor Serajuddaula Syed, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, spoke about Zafar and Atia Foundation Charitable Trust and its contributions in health and education sectors.
Dr. MehtabS. Karim, the founding Vice-Chancellor is an eminent educationist and earlier served at well known universities in Pakistan and UK and till recently was a distinguished professor of Public Policy in USA.In his address, Dr. Karim suggests, that the system of Higher Education in Pakistan needs substantial overhaul, particularly in the areas of research and faculty development.
Professor Shershah Syed, an eminent gynecologist, writer and human rights activist traced the history of universities and said that though the first university of the world was established at Taxilla near Rawalpindi, the state of education in the contemporary Pakistani society is deplorable. Dr. Shaheen Zafar, treasurer of the foundation offered vote of thanks.
